Psychology Week 4: Whowell
This weeks reading of chapter 6 and 7! Was fun just like last weeke. I like being able to read about children and really identify with the children within my family. A lot of personal examples were brought to mind as I read. This week the goal within our reading was to understand how children acquire a sense of self, understand the meaning of gender and play in regards to children development and learning and finally defining major stressors in childhood.
The first goal is how children develop a sense of self. Initially children identify with their physical attributes, like hair color or eye color. Their identities slowly change through cognitive and social maturity. Roles the family and roles of siblings are two main contributors to this. Parents, specifically parenting styles, can mold children. There are four parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. I can most easily identify with authoritative parenting, the majority of parents in my family would fall into this category; My sisters , my brother-in-laws, my aunts, and uncles, and most importantly my parents. Authoritative is when parents respond to the children's needs, while maintaining parental control. They take the time to explain to the children, so they understand why they do what they do. This nurtures good behavior and encourages independence, I can see this within myself and within my siblings. the fun part is seeing these behaviors grow in my nieces and nephews. Siblings also play a role in a child development of self. Older siblings can be role models, and sibling often create a sibling underworld. Which is a subsystem or coalition of siblings where siblings play a role almost as parents. Divorce is another thing they can have a long-term affect the development of self along with childcare.
Childcare was very interesting to me, I felt like I did not understand how many good things can come out of daycare. The majority of kids under five have received some type of daycare. It has been found to aid in motor development, and also increase height and weight in children. Although child in day care are exposed to sickness at a younger age, they are less likely to get sick later in school.
The next goal was to understand the meaning of gender of the child. This is fairly new focus but psychologist urge the correct use of sex and gender or sex being a biological born male or female and gender being a psychological aspect of male or female. Three terms used is gender identity which is a conviction or feeling of male or female. Gender stereotype which is the police are about characteristics of being male or female. Gender roles are expectations of what male or female should do. There are different theories of gender development however I believe the two big ones for me are cognitive development where children acquire a sense of identity from the behaviors around them and the contractor and understanding of male or female characteristics. The example given in the book of a girl watching the women cook, really hit it home for me. The reason why I really fell in love with cooking and went to culinary school, was because I loved watching my mom cook. Acquired of gender identity happens by the age of four children are aware of their identity and that is a stable over time. There are many rolls family peers media can play reinforcing that identity throughout that child's life. Acquiring gender identity happens by the age of four, children are aware of their identity and that is a stable over time. There are many roles family, peers, and media can play reinforcing that identity throughout that child's life.
The next goal was to understand importance of play. A child can have many different types of play on occupied, solitary, onlooker, parallel, associative, and cooperative play. These progress as children mature. Cognitive development is as children play they learn about the objects in their world, and children use these objects to symbolize their ideas of the world and to learn behavior skills of health in the future. As a play socially they learn to get along with other children. At different ages they prefer different Play me girls at a young age prefer opposite sex however once they grow older they typically like same-sex playmates. Children can use play to work out emotional issues or fears of failure. As children transition through life lessons can we learn through play.
And finally the last goal is to find a major stressors in childhood. There are many stressors in children's lives, in the chapter 7 covers a lot of them. One stressor can be health, one common reason for children missing school is asthma. Asthma is when the lungs are filled with mucus and tighten, which produce coughing and wheezing and problems breathing. Obesity has doubled in children from 6 to 1. An alarming estimate of over 25,000,000 children under 17 overweight. Learning disabilities can be a stressor for approximately 10% percent of school age children United States. ADD and ADHD diagnosis have increased tremendously over the last decade. Bullying is a huge stressor for children cyberbullying is becoming a huge issue just recently. Spent all these things children can also be going through child abuse history physical sexual emotional or charming left. Sadly these things are not uncommon.
Chapter 7 was not as fun for me with thinking about children stressors. However it was very interesting to see and learn about things like Gardner's multiple intelligences. I think my nieces would identify with spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, and naturalist.

Glad you were able to focus on gender. It is often a term that is misunderstood with sex. Sex is a biological term in it's purest form. The way you described gender was perfect when you said it was a conviction of feeling male or female. Gender socialization plays a major role on what we culturally learn is male or female. In the field of education this has become a topic that has received increased intention and education.
ReplyDeleteIt's important that psychology has updated the definitions of gender and sex since the culture has switched here in recent history. More and more of children are identifying with the opposite gender based on their sex. Like explained and said by Professor Mollin, sex is biological and gender is more psychological. This is meant to say that sex deals with our anatomy and what we were born as while gender deals with if the person identifies as a male or a female. This does not go with the old school way of thinking in that we identify with what our sex tell us to be. It's interesting to see psychology book updated this way of thinking because of these current trends. It's important in the classroom to make sure that you know what the students would like to be identified as regardless of their sex. This is important to be sensitive in today's culture so nobody is offended even though I may not agree with it.
ReplyDeleteAs I read through everyones blog this week, I really appreciated the fact that many of us touched on the importance of play on the developing mind. I talked a lot about a quote that stuck with me throughout my time at Trinity and I want to share! The American Academy of Pediatrics stated, “Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth." Its a powerful statement because in todays day and age technology has impacted children's desire to go outside and play. The social aspect or downfall from this is really damaging to the youth, so how do we find an equal balance?! Thanks for your post!
ReplyDeleteHello Alicia, great job on your post...I'm glad you learned about child care during this assignment.
ReplyDeleteThis section of your blog caught my eye and I just wanted to add... I sent my two children to daycare when they were infants. I tried to make sure that I found one of the best places in town - without worrying about how much it was going to cost me. For working parents, especially working moms, it is critical to have child care that we can trust. Since we are away approximately 12 hours per day (including travel time), it is crucial to find a place that will give us peace of mind, so that we are able to focus on our jobs. These factors are very important, as daycare provides us with the ability to earn a living for our families.
The quality of child care is #1 because you know it will meet our children's needs and will provide an emotionally, supportive and stimulating environment for them. It's important to have teachers that are patient and that care to take the time to engage, talk and play with our children frequently. Studies have shown that consistent care, involving repetition or routine supports cognitive and social development in the early stages of life. It is true that what the kids learn early on impact their academic progress in a positive way in the long run. Elba
Hi Alicia, I am glad you touched on the effects of stress in young persons life. Identifying these stressor makes a lot of sense when trying to help children become successful in their tasks. Knowing if they have medical, cognitive or social stressors, will help their support team better guide and assist the young people. Advocating for attention to the the possible bullying or educational needs children need to overcome needs to be recognized as you noted. Great insights.
