Psychology Week One: Whowell

This week the text and video really felt like a good introduction to what we will be covering in this course. The first chapter for me hit on a lot of topics, it referenced a lot of topics like nature versus nurture, different philosophers and how each one had another philosopher who challenged or opposed their theories. A couple things stuck out to me that I am excited to learn more about.

There was a quote by Peterson, 1988, "adolescence... it begins in biology and ends in culture." This really resonated with me, I grew up with a lot of children with the same family background. Middle class, working parents, multiple children, we all spent a lot of time within the church, very similar childhoods. However when we grew up and hit the real world, we all went in different directions. Each of our adolescence life was very different, I would be interested to know if this is what this concept is talking about.

Another thing that stuck out to me was that correlation is not the same as causation. Although there appears to be correlation, it does not necessarily mean that they are causing one another to happen. I would be interested to see how many false conclusions have been drawn, and if this is something we will be addressing.

I watched the video about the Mobuis Strips. My interpretation of the video was that the Mobuis strip was a two sided paper. One side represents the outer version of yourself, what you want the world to see you as. The image that you want people to know you for, the other side is a more vulnerable version of yourself. It is your inner self a true version of yourself that if the world saw could be very dangerous or even deadly. When you keep the two separate you form a wall up to the world, however when you create this figure 8/ mobias strip shape with the paper the two sides merge together. You find a wholeness in yourself merging your "perfect image" with your inner self. Therefore creating a perfect balance for a god healthy life.

I think the video and text relate to each other because the introduction to Lifespan Development is about a journey one takes throughout their life. It is almost as lifespan is the journey to creating this Mobuis strip, finding the perfect balance between your inner self and the "perfect image." I look forward to seeing if this is what others take away from the two topics, and if the course will continue on this Mobuis strip as well.
